HEARTS & HOMES FOR REFUGEES STANDS WITH THE PEOPLE OF UKRAINE
Over the past six months, Hearts & Homes for Refugees has welcomed refugees from Afghanistan, Myanmar and Central America. It is not certain when refugees from Ukraine will arrive. When they do, Hearts & Homes is prepared to show generosity and compassion toward Ukrainians, as we do towards all refugees.
Our welcoming work will continue through our partners — the U.S. Department of State resettlement agencies. When the time comes, we will join them in resettling Ukrainian refugees. We do not know what the future holds, but we can share the following about Ukrainians in the U.S. and the Lower Hudson Valley:
Ukrainians have been arriving as refugees to the US in relatively small numbers since the start of the annexation of Crimea in 2014 (and earlier).
In FY2022 (Oct 1, 2021, through January 31, 2022) seven Ukrainians have arrived as refugees in New York State.
HIAS NY has resettled Ukrainian refugees through a special program for members of designated religious minorities from the former Soviet Union who have close family members in the U.S.
NYC has a Ukrainian population of about 150,000, and there could be a significant number of arrivals who would eventually be reunified with family members here.
Here is information about how to help Ukrainian refugees while we await their arrival:
